MALIBU, Calif. -
Pepperdine women's volleyball head coach Nina Matthies announce the 2006 schedule Monday. The 27-match slate includes 15 teams from the 2005 NCAA tournament field, including local rivals USC, UCLA, Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara.
The season is set to open in Honolulu, Hawaii, against the Wahine on August 25 and 26. Pepperdine then returns home to face Texas, Long Island and Cal Poly in the Pepperdine Classic. Following the first home matches of the season, the Waves head north to Berkeley, Calif., for a tournament where it will face off against American, Colorado State and Cal. One more match on the road, a rematch of last year's NCAA second round opponent Southern Cal awaits on September 14 before a three match home stand including the West Coast Conference (WCC) opener against Gonzaga on Sept. 29.
"We have a great schedule next year," commented Matthies who will be in her 24th season at the helm of the Wave's program. "The first three weeks will be tough for sure. But I really think our non-conference matches will prepare us for league play and the NCAA tournament."
Pepperdine is coming off a 19-12 season where it finished second in the WCC and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament. In the postseason, the Waves defeated BYU, 3-1, before downing USC, 3-0 in Los Angeles, Calif.
