USF Volleyball opened its spring competitive season at Northern Arizona University last week. The Dons scrimmaged with NAU and then later in the day played a series of games with NAU. The Dons turned in a strong performance, winning all five games. Everyone on the team saw action in the first outing.
Several Dons turned in solid performances. Freshmen middle blockers Alix Gombos and Carly Babin came out with strong showings, while outside hitters Susan Bednarova, Anna Berger, and Kristen Hasselberg all put up good numbers on the outside.
"I was very pleased with our overall performance," USF head coach Jeff Nelson said. "We got better as the day went on and several of the freshmen got some quality court time. Having only practices a couple of days it was great to get out and play and see where we are at right now."
The Dons are off this week, but then will host the annual USF Spring Tournament on April 1st at Memorial Gym. It will be an all day tournament with each team getting four matches in. Participating teams include: Cal Poly SLO, UC-Davis, Nevada, St. Mary's, Pacific, Sacramento State and USF. The tournament will kick-off at 9:00am with USF playing its first match at 10:10 on Saturday morning. USF's other matches are set for 12:20, 1:25, and 3:35pm. There is no cost for the event.
The rest of the Spring Schedule will have USF at Sac State on April 8th and finally closing out the spring on April 22nd at San Jose State. USF will also host its first ever Spring Fling on May 14th. This will be an outdoor grass tournament to close out the year and raise money for women's athletics.
