Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's volleyball team participated in their first spring tournament this past weekend at San Francisco, where they squared off against Pacific, UC Davis, Sacramento State and Cal Poly. Saint Mary's held its own, sweeping Pacific, UC Davis and Cal Poly and splitting with Sacramento State. Three starters from last year's squad are injured which provided an opportunity for five freshmen see a lot of action.
Freshmen Brittany Barker, Taylor Groess, Nikki Gonzalez, Christine Kennedy and Erin Thompson all played significant roles in the four matches with positive results. Juniors Mandy Bible, Lauren Holland, and Christina Kirk balanced the young lineup with steady play throughout the day.
Mandy Bible and Brittany Barker put on a blocking clinic with 18 stuffs between the two of them. Christina Kirk hit an impressive .430 attack efficiency both as an opposite and middle blocker. Taylor Groess and Nikki Gonzalez served 7 and 6 aces respectively, while the Gaels scored 24 points on Lauren Holland's serve for the tournament.
Saint Mary's will play in a similar tournament on Saturday, April 8 at Sacramento State.
