May 9, 2006

MISSOULA, Mont. - Gonzaga University assistant coach Jerry Wagner has been named the new head volleyball coach at the University of Montana. Wagner will start with the Grizzlies program at the end of May. Wagner spent one season with the Bulldogs program, helping coach the Bulldogs to their best finish in 10 years.

Wagner has long ties to the state of Montana and the Big Sky Conference. A 1986 graduate of Montana State University-Northern, Wagner worked one season as the head coach of his alma mater before working as an assistant coach at Montana. He helped coach the Grizzlies to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990. He then moved on to serve as an assistant coach at Oregon State University and Montana State University before joining the Bulldogs staff last year.

Also joining Wagner's staff is Ryan Platt who served as the Bulldogs volunteer assistant coach last season. Platt coached for three seasons at Eastern Oregon University before joining the Gonzaga staff last season.

Gonzaga head coach Kip Yoshimura will look to replace Wagner on the Bulldogs staff over the next several weeks.
