(San Francisco) - USF head coach Jeff Nelson today announced the 2006 San Francisco Volleyball schedule. This year, the Dons open home play hosting the 2006 Golden Gate Classic featuring San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara, the Big West Conference co-Champion, on September 1 -3 at War Memorial Gym.
The 2006 season features 16 matches against 2005 NCAA Tournament competitors. These include 10 against West Coast Conference rivals St. Mary's, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara and San Diego as well as non-conference matches against Arizona, Sacramento State, Western Kentucky, Cornell and Long Island.
"We are really looking forward to an exciting season this year, our 30th year of sanctioned play," USF head coach Jeff Nelson said. "Following perhaps the greatest spring in program history, many of our players are spending the summer fine-tuning their skills with several team members traveling to Europe and South America to experience international competition. While our 2006 schedule will be challenging, we believe we are well-positioned to continue strengthening our performance."
USF kicks off the 2006 schedule at the Wild Cat Classic at the University of Arizona in Tucson on August 25 - 26. Participants include Arizona, Northern Colorado and Siena. The Dons then return to San Francisco to host the Golden Gate Classic where they play San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara, the co-Big West 2005 Champions.
Next, the Dons hit the road September 8-9 for the Sacramento State Invitational. Teams from Western Kentucky and UC Riverside are participating.
Following their home game against UC Davis on September 12, USF heads to the mid-west to play in the Marquette-hosted Jesuit Joust. It's then on to the east coast and the Long Island Invitational on September 22-23.
Opening play in the top ranked WCC begins at Memorial Gym on September 28 when the Dons host No. 22 San Diego. Last year was one of the most successful seasons in WCC league history as five teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament. As a result, the conference had the highest percentage of schools from one league in the country.
After meeting San Diego, USF plays No. 4 SCU at home. It's then on the road to play St. Mary's, No. 18 Pepperdine, and Loyola Marymount on their home courts. The Dons next home stand is on October 19 against Gonzaga and Portland on October 21.
San Francisco concludes its 2006 regular season at the 28th Annual Bankers Classic, the oldest college volleyball tournament in the county. Hosted by the University of the Pacific, participants also include Houston and Portland State.
