SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresh off of its spectacular run to the Final Four in 2005, the Santa Clara University women's volleyball team officially unveiled its 2006 schedule Monday afternoon. In addition to competition against its seven counterparts in the West Coast Conference, the Broncos will hit the road for matches against some of the nation's best teams in Texas, Missouri, Notre Dame and Stanford.
The Broncos start the 2006 season off with 11 consecutive road contests, beginning with an August 25 match against Pacific to kick off tournament play in Fresno. In that span SCU, which ended 2005 as the fourth-ranked team in the nation, will also travel to Notre Dame for a September 3 match, to Austin, Tex. For a tournament pitting them against Big 12 powers Texas and Missouri, and finally a tournament in Stanford which will feature a rematch of last season's second-round NCAA Tournament upset as the Broncos and Cardinal square off at 7 p.m. on September 14.
Santa Clara plays the first of its eight games in the Leavey Center in 2006 with a non-conference match against their 2005 NCAA first-round opponents, the Sacramento State Hornets. First serve for the home opener against the Hornets is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19.
SCU will host its usual slate of seven home matches against its WCC opponents beginning the weekend of October 5-7 as the Loyola Marymount Lions and Pepperdine Waves come to town. After a 2005 season which saw a conference-record six WCC teams reach the NCAA Tournament, the 2006 WCC season should be one of the most competitive in years.
