LONG BEACH, Calif. - Loyola Marymount volleyball's Heather Hughes and Emily Day qualified for the main draw of the AVP Long Beach Open, taking place in Long Beach through Sunday. The Lion pair had to win three matches to advance to Friday's main draw round one.
As the 54th seed, Hughes and Day became the lowest seed to ever advance to the main draw since the AVP began keeping such statistics.
Their reward? A first-round match-up with 2004 Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. The battle begins at 9:00 a.m. in Long Beach.
Both All-West Coast Conference honorees in the past, Hughes and Day will open up the LMU volleyball season on August 24 with St. John's at the USC Classic. Hughes will be in her senior campaign with the Lions, while Day will be a junior.
