Three WCC Schools Ranked in CSTV/AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll

SAN BRUNO, CA - Coming off of its most successful season in history, the West Coast Conference placed three schools in the 2006 CSTV/AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll. Santa Clara, which finished the 2005 season at No. 4, enters the 2006 season ranked sixth in the nation. Pepperdine and San Diego, also ranked in the Top 25 at the end of last season, earned the No. 19 and No. 20 spots in the poll.

Santa Clara recorded its best season in school history in 2005, taking its first WCC title since 2000 and reaching the NCAA Final Four. The Broncos notched an overall record of 27-5 and became first WCC school to reach the Final Four. Santa Clara looks to remain at the top of the conference with 10 returners, including two All-Americans in juniors middle blocker Anna Cmaylo and setter Crystal Matich as well as the 2005 WCC Freshman of the Year, outside hitter Brittany Lowe.

After tying for second place in the WCC last season and making the NCAA San Diego and Interim Head Coach Brent Hilliard were picked to finish third in the WCC preseason poll. The Toreros welcome the return of senior middle hitter Christie Dawson, an All-WCC first team selection and All-America honorable mention in 2005.

For the second straight year, Nebraska enters the season as the No. 1 team in the nation. Penn State took the No. 2 spot in the poll, while defending National Champion Washington checked in at No. 3. Stanford and Florida, ranked fourth and fifth, round out the top of the poll.

Led by Washington and Stanford's positions in the top five, the Pac-10 secured three of the top ten spots on the poll, and six of the Top 25. The Big Ten was next with five spots on the poll, with Penn State and Wisconsin landing in the top ten. The Big 12 produced four and the West Coast Conference three teams out of 25, while the BIG EAST and the SEC are represented by two teams apiece. The WAC, MAC, and Mountain West are each represented by one team on the preseason poll.
