Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team reported to camp today to kick off training for the 2007 season. 13 players took to the court in McKeon Pavilion for the start of grueling double-days and intense training. The Gaels welcome back eight returning players and five newcomers.
"We are all excited to be back," Head Coach Rob Browning said. "We are looking forward to a competitive season, especially in conference. We have a lot of work to do, but we are encouraged with how we started off the first day. We are very happy with the team we have."
Among the players returning for Saint Mary's are 2006 West Coast Conference All-Freshman selection Megan Burton. The Kapolei, HI native averaged 1.26 kills per game and 1.02 blocks per contest. Joining Burton are juniors Brittany Barker and Taylor Groess. Barker led the WCC in blocks with 1.59 per game while Groess took her game to Argentina this summer to play with the USA Select Team.
Browning welcomes five newcomers to the squad that garnered High Honorable Mention accolades from prepvolleyball.com. Freshman Megan York joins the Gaels as an outside hitter and brings with her plenty of credentials. York was named an AVCA High School Senior All-American following her stellar senior year where she was also named the Texas Division 4 Player of the Year. Freshman setter Kapua Kamana'o comes from Honolulu, HI where she will be counted on to fill the shoes of former SMC standout Mandy Bible. Christy Payne, Shannon Lowell and Kelly Huston, round out the highly touted class.
Saint Mary's will open the 2007 season at the University of Arizona Tournament on Friday, August 24. The Gaels will play three games in two days, with match-ups against Eastern Washington, Utah State and host Arizona.
