The Pepperdine women's volleyball team received 484 points and landed in the No. 19 spot of the 2006 College Sports Television (CSTV)/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason poll announced by the AVCA late Tuesday night.
This year marks the eighth consecutive in which the Waves have been included in the AVCA's preseason top 25. The highest preseason ranking for a Pepperdine squad belongs to the 2003 team which opened the season at No. 5. The 2004 team began the year at No. 9, while last year's team opened the season at No. 25.
After a late-season push which included a pair of NCAA tournament victories, Pepperdine ranked 18th in the final poll of 2005.
Nebraska pulled in 14 first-place votes and will open the season in the top spot, followed closely by Penn State, defending national champion Washington, Stanford and Florida which round out the top five. West Coast Conference (WCC) rival Santa Clara opened at the No. 6 spot, while San Diego was one place back of Pepperdine at No. 20.
The Waves will open the 2006 season Fri., Aug. 25 at No. 7 Hawaii. After a pair of matches against the Rainbow Wahine, Pepperdine will face No. 8 Texas in its home opener and second game of the Asics Classic at Pepperdine University.
