Volleyball Ranked No. 15 in Preseason Top-25

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association has released their preseason top-25 poll and the University of San Diego checks in at No. 15, the highest preseason ranking in the history of the program.

San Diego, who made its second trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in the past three seasons a year ago, returns 11 players and three starters from last season's West Coast Conference Championship team highlighted by first-team All-WCC honoree, senior Laurel Abrahamson. Entering her final season in a Torero uniform, Abrahamson enjoyed a break-out type season in 2006 as she posted career-best numbers with 363 kills (3.13 kpg), a team-leading .326 attack percentage and team best 89 blocks.

Two more All-Conference honorees are also making their return to the Toreros in the form of junior setter Jessica Nyrop (All-WCC Honorable Mention) and sophomore libero Andrea Csaszi (All-WCC Freshman Team). Nyrop set a new program record for single-season assists this past season with 1,546 while directing the Toreros offense to a .255 team attacking percentage. Csaszi posted 285 digs in her freshman season, ranking her second on the team.

USD joins one other WCC school in the AVCA top-25 preseason poll as Santa Clara University Checks in at No. 24.For the third straight year, the University of Nebraska enters the season as the No. 1 team in the nation. Stanford University took the No. 2 spot in the poll, while Penn State checked in at No. 3. The University of Texas and UCLA, ranked fourth and fifth, round out the top of the preseason poll.

USD will begin action in the 2007 season at Long Beach State on Aug. 24, then will make their home debut on Aug. 28 against Fairfield. This upcoming Saturday, San Diego will take on the Toreros of old in the annual Alumni match to be held at the Sports Center at 11 a.m.
