SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- 2009 WCC preseason favorite San Diego and last year's WCC champion Saint Mary's both appeared on the AVCA DI Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Toreros were ranked No. 22, while the Gaels took the last slot at No. 25. Pepperdine and Santa Clara also received votes and appeared on two or more ballots.
The Toreros, which come off an 18-7 record, were selected by the conference coaches as the preseason favorite to take home this year's title, despite finishing in second in conference last season. The team returns nine letterwinners, five of which are starters, including 2009 WCC Player of the Year and All-American Ali Troost, 2008 WCC Player of the Year and All-American Amy Mahinalani DeGroot, and 2009 all-WCC honorable mention selection Kelsi Myers.
Reigning WCC champion Saint Mary's, which recorded an impressive 13-1 conference record and went on to compete in its second consecutive NCAA Tournament last season, returns eight letterwinners from that squad. Four of those returning are starters, while three appeared on the 2009 preseason all-conference team.
Both ranked teams will jump start the 2010 season along with the rest of the conference on Friday, August 27. San Diego will compete against Hawaii at the Hawaii Invitational, while the Gaels will compete against UNLV and Sacred Heart at the Long Beach State Tournament.
