MALIBU, Calif. -
Senior Kekai Crabbe and junior Lecca Roberts are returning home this weekend, but it will be more of a business trip than a fun trip home before the fall semester begins as the Pepperdine women's volleyball is scheduled to open the 2006 season against the University of Hawaii on Friday at 4 p.m. (PDT) in Honolulu.
This will be both ladies second trip to their native state as members of the Waves. The first trip to the Stan Sherrif Center resulted in a pair of losses early in the 2004 season. Head coach Nina Matthies feels like this time around her student-athletes will be ready for the challenge.
"This time around [Lecca and Kekai] are more experienced," Matthies said. "Roberts was just a freshman the first time and Kekai was only a sophomore. They are both more experienced and injury free. Both of them have more defined roles now than they did in 2004 and they know they are a huge part of this team.
"I expect there to be nerves because it is the first match of the season. We are not going to be polished, but no team is at this time of the season. I don't think they will be nervous about being home. Hawaii is a great place to play. They have great fans and a great atmosphere, it will be fun to just see what we can do."
Pepperdine (0-0) has dropped the last five meetings to Hawaii (0-0) dating back to the 1997 season. For this year's opener both teams are ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top 25 with the Waves at No. 19 and the Rainbow Wahine at No. 7.
Tickets are $19 for lower level seats with upper level seating ranging from $16-$3 and can be purchased at the stadium box office or by phone at (808) 944-2697.
