ALL EIGHT WCC SCHOOLS OPEN THE SEASON THIS WEEKEND

All eight WCC schools open the 2008 season this weekend. Two WCC schools open the season in the top 25 with Pepperdine ranked No. 16 in the Volleyball Magazine poll and San Diego ranked No. 22 in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches poll.

San Diego Claims Top Spot In 2008 WCC Preseason Poll
The University of San Diego has been selected as the preseason favorite to take home the 2008 West Coast Conference regular season title, narrowly edging out Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University, as voted on by the head coaches in the conference. The Toreros, who shared the 2007 WCC crown with Santa Clara, received three first place votes for a total of 56 points. This marks just the second time since the 2000 season that San Diego has been selected as the WCC preseason favorite. Following close behind the Toreros in the voting was Pepperdine, which totaled 55 points and also received three first place votes, and Santa Clara, which totaled 53 points and garnered one first place vote. Rounding out the top half of the poll is Saint Mary's College and the University of San Francisco, both of which tallied 34 points with the Gaels receiving the last first place vote. Loyola Marymount University was tabbed sixth with 29 points, followed by Gonzaga University with 18 points, and the University of Portland with 9 points.

WCC Among The Elite Volleyball Conferences In The Country
Over the last six seasons, the West Coast Conference has established itself as one of the premier women's volleyball conferences in the country. Over the past five seasons, the WCC has owned a national top five ranking in the RPI three times.

Welcome Back
All eight WCC teams return several key players in 2008. In all, the WCC returns eight All-WCC first team members and six of the 12 players who earned All-WCC honorable mention. The returning first team All-WCC members include: Haley Carroll (USF), Emily Day (LMU), Amy DeGroot (USD), Kiah Fiers (PEP), Krista Kelley (SCU), Brittany Lowe (SCU), Julie Rubenstein (PEP), and Megan York (SMC).

  • The Zags will be returning three starters and nine letterwinners from last year's team.

  • Among the notable returners will be Elaina Renius who leads the team coming into the season in kills (329) and hitting percentage (.297). Renius was also ninth in the conference in hitting percentage.

  • Gonzaga posted a 5-9 mark in WCC action. The five conference wins were the most by the Bulldogs since the 2001 season.

  • Last year, the Bulldogs were second in the conference last year in blocks per game (2.86)

  • Gonzaga tips off the season at the University of Montana Tournament where it will take on Bradley and the host Grizzlies (8/29), North Dakota State and UC Riverside (8/30).

  • The Lions return four starters and eight letterwinners from last season's squad that posted a 16-13 overall record.

  • The Lions return two players that earned All-WCC freshman honors in Renne Horton and Whitney Leonard. Horton was second in the conference in assists (1318) and Leonard was third in the conference in digs average (4.53)

  • The senior leadership will come from Emily Day, a first team All-WCC selection, who led the team in kills average (4.0), service aces per game (.34), and points (518).

  • Last year, the Lions ranked first in the conference in digs per game (17.54).

  • The Lions open the season at the New Mexico Tournament where they will take on Idaho State (8/29), Central Arkansas (8/30), and host New Mexico (8/30).

  • The Waves received three first place votes to earn the second spot in the 2008 WCC volleyball preseason poll, as selected by the conference coaches.

  • The Waves welcome back five starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's 18-11 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 19th time and also the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.

  • Pepperdine returns two players from last year's All-WCC first team in junior Kiah Fiers and senior Julie Rubenstein. Fiers was second in the conference in assist average (12.82) and Rubenstein was second in the league in points (546.5). Also returning will be senior Rachel Lumsden, who led the conference in service aces (43).

  • The Waves open the season at the Cal State Fullerton Tournament where they will take on UNC Greensboro (8/29), Delaware (8/30), and the host Titans (8/30).

  • The Pilots return five starters and 10 letterwinners overall from last season's squad.

  • Top returners for the Pilots are sophomore Jessica Clemens, who led the team and was tied for sixth in the conference in service aces (36), and sophomore Danielle Dupar, who led the team in digs (348) and was 10th in the conference overall.

  • Portland will be playing under new Head Coach Joe Houck, who has a record of 131-76 overall in eight years as a collegiate head coach.

  • Senior Jennifer Sheedy ranks 5th all-time for the Pilots in attack percentage at .260.

  • The Pilots tip off the season at the Holiday Inn Classic where they will face Washington (8/30) and host Montana State (8/29 and 8/30).

  • The Gaels received one first place vote for a total of 34 points to tie with San Francisco for fourth place in the preseason poll.

  • Saint Mary's will field the most experience team with all six starters returning as well as 12 letterwinners.

  • Sophomore Megan York was named to the All-WCC freshman team as well as being named to the All-WCC First team and WCC Co-Freshman of the Year. Also returning this year are All-WCC Freshman team members Kapua Kamana'o and Shannon Lowell. York was third in the league in kills (471) and points (543.5). Kamana'o led the team in assists (1,046) and Lowell was tied for the league lead in blocks (142).

  • Saint Mary's opens the season at the Fresno State Tournament and will face UC Davis (8/29), Cal State Bakersfield (8/30), and the host Bulldogs (8/30).

  • The Toreros enter the 2008 season ranked No. 22 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason poll and first in the conference preseason poll with three first place votes for a total of 56 points.

  • The Toreros return five starters and 11 letterwinners including, All-WCC first team member Amy DeGroot, who led the team in kills and was seventh in the conference (3.99). Also returning is senior Jessica Nyrop and sophomore Kelsi Myers, who combined for 1,526 of San Diego's league leading 1,693 assists last season.

  • San Diego has posted a 48-8 (.857) record during conference play the last four seasons, while capturing three WCC titles.

  • San Diego opens the season at the San Diego State Invitational and will face Albany (8/29), UC Irvine (8/30) and the host Aztecs (8/30).

  • The Dons, who return five starters and nine letterwinners, tied for fourth in the preseason poll with 34 points.

  • Returning for San Francisco is last year's WCC Defensive Player of the Year and All-WCC first team member, Haley Carroll, who led the league in digs (522) and All-WCC honorable mentions Alix Gombos and Sarah Mandala. Gombos, one of five seniors on the Dons roster, was second on the team in hitting percentage (.309), while Mandala led the team in kills as a freshman last season with 350.

  • Last year, the Dons were second in the conference in digs (1,888), and third in hitting percentage (.228) and blocks per game (2.64).

  • USF opens the season at the Long Beach State Tournament as the Dons take on the host 49ers (8/29), Missouri State (8/29), and Indiana (8/30).

  • Santa Clara comes in at a close third in the preseason poll, receiving one first place vote for a total of 53 points.

  • The Broncos return five starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's team that posted an 11-3 conference record that tied them for first and also made the NCAA Tournament.

  • Santa Clara returns All-WCC first team members in sophomore Krista Kelley, who also won Co-Freshman of the Year honors and senior Brittany Lowe. Kelley ranked third in the conference in kills average (4.46), while Lowe was fifth (4.26).

  • Last year, the Broncos led the WCC in kills (16.67) and assists (15.49).

  • The Broncos begin the season at the Ute Invite, where they will face Utah Valley (8/30) and host Utah (8/31).
