Tempe, Ariz. - An early morning sweep (30-25, 30-21, 30-12) of Northeastern left Loyola Marymount volleyball playing host Arizona State Saturday night for the title at the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Sun Devil Volleyball Classic. Despite the play of all-tournament selections Emily Day and Heather Hughes, the Lions fell to the Sun Devils 3-0 (30-26, 30-27, 30-25).
The Lions finished the opening weekend 2-1, posting wins over Utah Valley State and Northeastern. Arizona State finished 3-0.
One of two Lions selected to the all-tournament team, Day notched statistical double-doubles in each of the three matches. Saturday, she had 12 kills and 11 digs in the sweep of Northeastern, and 12 kills and 24 digs against Arizona State.
Hughes joined Day on the all-tournament team after capping off the weekend with 19 kills and 25 digs against Arizona State.
The Lions tallied 118 digs in the three-game match against the Sun Devils, with five LMU players in the double-digits. Despite the strong defensive effort, the Lions could not overcome their .123 team hitting percentage.
Junior Christianna Reneau's 15 kills and .556 hitting percentage led the Lions to the win over Northeastern. In that match, the Lions hit .654 as a team in the third game to close out the sweep. LMU held Northeastern to just a .081 team hitting percentage.
Three different Lions led LMU in kills over the three matches.
LMU will return to Los Angeles to open its home season next weekend with the LMU/USC Hilton LAX Invitational. The Lions will first face 11th-ranked Tennessee Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion.
