SAN BRUNO, Calif. - San Diego sophomore outside hitter Amy DeGroot has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after helping lead the 12th-ranked Toreros to a season-opening sweep over Long Beach State this past week. This is DeGroot's first WCC Player of the Week honor of her career.
DeGroot led all players with her career-high 17 kills on 36 attack attempts, while only posting three errors to post a .389 attack percentage. DeGroot also recorded 10 digs to pick up her first career double-double. DeGroot was also a huge help defensively as when game one was knotted at 25-25, she came together with Torey Ellick on a block to give USD their first lead of the match. DeGroot, who came on strong at the end of 2006, has quickly become one of USD's go-to players.
DeGroot and the Toreros will return to action at home on Tuesday evening with a 5 p.m. match against Fairfield University inside of the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
