MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine head women's volleyball coach Nina Matthies hopes to get a new tradition started in Malibu. Saturday afternoon 22 former Pepperdine players will hit the court for the first Blue v. Orange Alumni match. First serve for the alumni match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend and admission is free.
"I am excited to have a great group of gals coming back," said Matthies who is in her 24th season at the helm of the Waves' program. "We should have 22 players and I think it will be a really good time. I am looking forward to meeting husbands, kids and do a life-check. It has been a long time since I have seen some of them and I am really looking forward to making this an annual event."
Players ranging from Jana (Miller) Kiraly and Mary (McMichael) Steele from the 1980 and 1981 teams to Lindsey Hache from the 2000-03 teams are scheduled to appear in what should prove to be an afternoon full of fun and excitement leading up to the showcase match of No. 20 Pepperdine against No. 14 Purdue at 7 p.m.
In the nightcap, the Waves will be looking to pick off its first ranked opponent of the season when it hosts the Boilermakers. Pepperdine is 4-5 on the year, having only lost to teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA top 25. Most recently the Waves dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 9 USC Thursday night.
"We have played a tough schedule, we have played all these teams ranked ahead of us but we need to beat someone," said Matthies. "We need to battle and we need to keep working. We need to come out of this weekend with a victory. That is my goal."
