AROUND THE WCC

WCC Player of the Week
Amy DeGroot helped guide the Toreros to a 3-0 record this past week and to the championship of the USD Tournament. DeGroot lead the team with her 38 kills, recorded 20 digs and had a team-best 12 blocks en route to being named the MVP of the Tournament. On the season, DeGroot has a team-best 125 kills (4.46 kps), is hitting at a .269 clip and is second in digs with 72.

Two WCC Teams Ranked Among The Nation's Best
Two West Coast Conference women's volleyball teams are ranked in national polls. The University of San Diego is ranked No. 17 in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll, up three spots from last week, while Pepperdine University is ranked No. 13 in the Volleyball Magazine Poll and just moved up in the top 25 CSTV/AVCA Poll at No. 21.

National Leaders Among the WCC
Several players in the WCC rank among the nation's best in several categories. Notable leaders are Jessica Nyrop (USD) and Kapua Kamana'o (SMC), who are ninth and 13th in assists per game, while Julie Rubenstein (PEP) and Amy DeGroot (USD) are eighth and 12th in kills per game. As a team, San Diego ranks first in assists per game and in kills per game.

The WCC welcomes back several players who are on pace to eclipse the 1,000 kill and dig mark.

  • The Bulldogs went 2-2 losing at Washington State, before hosting the Gonzaga Tournament beating UTEP and San Diego State, before losing the final to Weber State.

  • Gonzaga placed two players on the all-tournament team in Elaina Renius and Denise Van de Mortel.

  • In the match against Weber State, Van de Mortel had 44 assists, 12 digs, and three block assists. She also leads the conference in assists with 440.

  • Renius is off to a good start leading the conference with 59.0 total blocks, and in total kills with 158. She had a career-high 22 kills against Washington State.

  • This week, Gonzaga takes on Idaho (9/17), before heading to the Pittsburgh Tournament to play host Pittsburgh (9/19), Virginia Commonwealth (9/19), and Eastern Michigan (9/20).

  • The Lions went 3-1, losing to Ohio State, before going undefeated at the Four Points Sheraton LAX/LMU Volleyball Classic beating Pittsburgh, San Jose State and UC Irvine.

  • The Lions had four players make the all-tournament team in Erin Downey, Renee Horton, Diana Hiromoto, and Emily Day, who also won tournament MVP honors.

  • Over the tournament, Day registered 44 kills, while hitting .270. She is currently second in the league in kills (151) and points (176.5), and third in service aces (14).

  • As a team, the Lions lead the conference in digs per game (15.17).

  • This week, the Lions take on UCSB (9/16), before heading to the Flo Hyman Invitational to face host Houston (9/19), Arizona (9/20), and Stephen F. Austin (9/20).

  • Pepperdine went undefeated at the Nevada AT&T Tournment beating UC Davis, Missouri, and host Nevada.

  • The Waves placed three players on the all-tournament team in Kiah Fiers, Rachel Lumsden, and Julie Rubenstein, who collected her third straight tournament MVP honor.

  • Rubenstein currently leads the conference in three categories: points per game (5.55), kills per game (4.60), and aces per game (.47).

  • The Waves (9-0) have tied their best start since 2000 when they started 9-0 and have held each of their past three opponents to under .100 hitting percentage.

  • This week, the Waves host the Pepperdine Asics Classic and will face UCSB (9/19), Cal State Northridge (9/20), and Texas State (9/20).

  • Kaylyn Jones' 44 assists against Seattle is a conference match-high for a three game set.

  • Jessica Clemens currently leads the conference in service aces with 17 of the team's 53 and also has the conference match-high with 10 against South Florida.

  • Clemens (10 kills, 15 digs) and Ashley Grayson (11 kills, 11 digs) had double-doubles against Portland State.

  • This week, the Pilots play at Oregon (9/16) before heading to the Hawkeye Holiday Inn Challenge to face host Iowa (9/19), Tulsa (9/20), and DePaul (9/20).

  • In the match against Pacfic, Hawaii native Chanteal Satele had a career high with 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.

  • Shannon Lowell currently ranks third in the conference in blocks per game (1.03), while Megan York is fourth in kills average (3.97) and Kapua Kamana'o is second in assists (369).

  • The Gaels are ranked third in the conference in both hitting percentage (.254) and assists average (12.72).

  • This week, the Gaels head to the Cal Poly Invitational to face host Cal Poly (9/18) and Stanford (9/19).

  • The Toreros went undefeated as they hosted the USD Invitational, beating Cal State Fullerton, Southern Mississippi, and Texas A&M.

  • Jessica Nyrop and Amy DeGroot were both named to the all-tournament team for the second straight week, with DeGroot receiving tournament MVP honors.

  • Ashton Basch recorded an .800 attack percentage, which is the third best single-match attack percentage in program history.

  • The Toreros lead the conference in hitting percentage (.292), assists per game (14.07 apg), and kills average (15.18).

  • This week, the Toreros host UC Riverside (9/16), before heading to the Husky Fever Classic to play host Washington (9/19), and Seattle University (9/20).

  • The Dons went 2-1 as they hosted the Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational, beating Sacramento State and Villanova, before losing to Miami.

  • The Dons had two players make the all-tournament team in Sarah Mandala and Haley Carroll.

  • In the match against Miami, Mandala matched a career-high with 21 kills on .340 hitting, while Carroll had a season-high 31 digs.

  • Carly Babin (.421) and Alix Gombos (.395) are one-two in the conference in hitting percentage, while Carroll leads the conference in digs with 170 and is second in aces with 15.

  • This week, the Dons head to the Titan Classic where they will face host Cal State Fullerton (9/19), Cal (9/20), and Central Connecticut State (9/20).

  • Santa Clara went 2-1 at the Stanford Invitational beating UCSB and New Mexico State, before losing to host Stanford.

  • The Broncos had two players make the all-tournament team in Anna Cmaylo and Lindsy Davigeadono.

  • Over the course of the tournament, Davigeadono had 10 kills, 104 assists, 17 digs, and 16 total blocks, while Cmaylo had 25 kills, two aces, 15 digs, and 16 total blocks.

  • The Broncos currently lead the league in service aces with a total of 54, with freshman Libby Morrison leading the way with 11.

  • This week, the Broncos host Sacramento State (9/16), before playing a back-to-back at Long Beach State (9/19-20).
