Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 3) -- The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) of Loyola Marymount University announced that Patrick Lane of men's soccer and Heather Hughes of volleyball have been selected as the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athletes of the Month. Lane and Hughes are honored for their athletic excellence throughout September.
In his first season on the field for the Lions, redshirt freshman Patrick Lane has been outstanding during the opening month. Lane has started six of LMU's seven games, putting together a record of 2-3-1 with a pair of shutouts, tying him for first in the conference. He is third in the WCC in saves (24) and fourth in goals-against-average (0.96).
Both of Patrick's victories this year came against ranked opponents as he made five saves in a 1-0 shutout victory at #17 New Mexico and had six saves in a 3-2 home win over #7 Harvard. Lane also had six saves and over 90 minutes of shutout soccer vs. #16 Creighton before falling to a lone goal in overtime.
His other shutout came at home against Columbia in a 0-0 tie. He was named to All-Tournament teams at two of LMU's three tournaments in the month (Nike/TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational and LMU Invitational).
As for Hughes, she led the nation in kills throughout September, averaging 5.78 kills per game (231 total) while hitting at a .326 clip.The Lions' senior opposite added 2.92 digs (117) total, 0.65 blocks (26), 0.90 assists (36), and 0.22 aces (9). During the month, Hughes was named National Player of the Week and West Coast Conference Player of the Week.
She was also an all-tournament selection for all three of the Lions' tournaments on the month. The Lions went 6-4 over the course of the month that featured currently ranked/receiving vote teams: Wisconsin, Pepperdine, UNLV, and Tulane. Hughes played in all 40 of the Lions' games in September.
Each month during the academic calendar, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) selects a male and female Student-Athlete of the Month whose performance best represents the athletic traditions of Loyola Marymount University. Other nominees for the month include Tibor Forai of men's water polo, John Lim of men's golf, Trevor Wiseman of men's cross country, Joslyn Slovek of women's soccer and Laura Mickelson of women's cross country.
