SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The West Coast Conference will have three nationally-televised sporting events in a five-day span this week, highlighted by a women's soccer match featuring two of the top 12 teams in the country.
In Sunday's soccer showdown, second-ranked University of Portland will travel to 12th-ranked Santa Clara University for a 12:00 p.m. match on ESPNU with Anne Marie Anderson and Olympic and World Cup Champion goalkeeper Briana Scurry calling the action. The Pilots (15-1-0 overall) and Broncos (10-3-2) are tied for first place in the WCC at 3-0-0, and have combined to outscore their conference opponents 12-0 over the first two weekends of the season.
Prior to Sunday's matchup, Portland will visit the University of San Diego (2-1-0 WCC, 9-5-2 overall) on Friday in the NSCAA Women's College Game of the Week on the Fox Soccer Channel. The match will kick off at 8:00 p.m. with Mark Rogondino and Christa Mann calling the action. The Toreros have been ranked as high as 14th in the country this season and have finished second in the WCC in each of the last two seasons.
The WCC will also have its first of two women's volleyball matches on the airwaves this Wednesday night (October 20) at 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU as Pepperdine University travels to Moraga to take on defending WCC Champion Saint Mary's College. Anne Marie Anderson and beach volleyball legend Holly McPeak will handle the announcing chores for ESPNU.
The Gaels and Waves are two of four teams within one game of the West Coast Conference lead after the first three weeks of the conference campaign. Pepperdine (14-5) and 19th-ranked San Diego (15-4) lead the way at 5-0, while Saint Mary's (12-6) and Loyola Marymount (12-8) are just one game back at 4-1. The Gaels and Toreros will meet on ESPNU on Wednesday, November 3 at 8:00 p.m. in San Diego.
