MALIBU, Calif. -
The Pepperdine women's volleyball team is coming off a 2-1 road swing and now returns to the friendly confines of Firestone Fieldhouse where the Waves have yet to drop a single game in West Coast Conference (WCC) play this season.
Keeping Pepperdine's (10-10) 12-game win streak alive will be no short order this weekend as nationally ranked Santa Clara and San Diego travel to Malibu with major implications in the conference standings on the line.
The Waves and Broncos are tied for second in the standings with 6-3 league records, with Santa Clara taking the first meeting of the season between the two teams. San Diego is undefeated thus far but has three of its final five league matches on the road.
Pepperdine is also fighting to keep its post-season hopes alive, but head coach Nina Matthies knows her team is starting to gel and is ready to make a run similar to the one it made into the third round of the NCAA Championship tournament a year ago.
"We are continuing to work on things but I feel like we played extremely well on the road last weekend," commented Matthies. "We took care of the ball and stayed focused for the entire match which is something we had been struggling with in the past. Kiah [Fiers] ran a nice offense over the weekend and we really competed. The team is playing with a sense of urgency because of our situation, we just need to keep it up over the next three weeks."
Thursday's match against Santa Clara will be televised on CSTV via tape delay and is scheduled for a 7 p.m. PT first serve. Saturday's match against San Diego is set for a 1 p.m. start.
