MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team posted its second consecutive sweep with a 3-0 victory (30-27, 30-25, 30-20) over UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Waves improved to 14-7 on the season while the Gauchos fell to 9-15.
In game one, the Waves limited the Gauchos to a .091 hitting percentage as Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) recorded a service ace at game point to give the Waves a 30-27 victory. After the Gauchos scored the first point in game two, the Waves never trailed again, as they hit a blistering .359 as a team and rolled to a 30-25 victory. Game three saw the Waves hit even better than the previous game, as they hit .366 en route to a 30-20 victory and the sweep.
Pepperdine hit .317 as a team while UC Santa Barbara hit .162.
The Waves attack was strengthened by the return of Rachel Lumsden (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS), who missed the previous six matches due to a knee injury, and Kristen Seaton (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo HS), who missed the Waves match at LMU on Oct. 27 due to an illness.
"A win's a win, and I'm happy with the win," Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthies said. "I was happy that we were able to work in Rachel and Kristen tonight, and get them ready to go for this weekend. That was my goal for tonight, and you don't always get to accomplish your goals, so I'm happy we were able to do that."
Julie Rubenstein (Camarillo, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) recorded her team-leading 14th double-double as she recorded 19 kills and 12 digs, Fiers notched 43 assists, seven digs and six kills, and Kayla Walker (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) registered 11 kills and six digs.
Up next, the Waves resume West Coast Conference play when they host Portland on Thursday at 7 p.m.
