For the third time this season, WCC teams will be featured on television, with CSTV televising Thursday's conference match between Pepperdine and No. 20 Santa Clara on a tape delayed basis. The match is scheduled to air on Sunday beginning at 3:00 PM on CSTV.
The Broncos head to Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, CA looking to gain sole possession of second place in the WCC. The teams last met on October 7, when the Broncos swept the Waves in Santa Clara. Pepperdine holds a 29-16 advantage over Santa Clara since 1985, but the Broncos have taken six straight, including a win in the NCAA Sweet 16 last year.
The Waves are led by senior middle blocker Sophia Milo who is second in the conference in hitting percentage at .378 and averages 1.10 blocks per game heading into tonight's match. Milo and senior libero Kekai Crabbe will look to stop the Broncos' hitters and their league-leading .268 attack percentage. Crabbe is third in the conference in digs per game and fifth all-time in digs at Pepperdine.
Despite losing senior setter Crystal Matich to injury in late September, Santa Clara still boasts the WCC's best team hitting percentage and most accurate individual hitter. Junior middle blocker Anna Cmaylo's .407 hitting percentage ranks her 19th in the nation in the category. The Broncos will look to senior Kim McGiven's 4.33 kills per game average to provide support outside against the second best blocking team in the conference.
With sole possession of second place on the line tonight and just three weeks of league play remaining, this weekend's matches could determine the WCC champion. San Diego holds a three-game lead over the Waves and Broncos, who share a 6-3 conference record entering tonight's matchup, a weekend sweep by the Toreros would give them at least a share of the title.
