SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team locked up its third West Coast Conference Championship in the past four years with Saturday's sweep over the University of Portland. This also marks USD's fifth overall WCC crown and the second time USD has won back-to-back WCC championships.
The Toreros are sharing the championship with Santa Clara University who also finished the season with an identical 11-3 mark in conference action.
The Toreros, who have advanced into the Sweet-16 round of the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons, concluded their thrilling 21-7 season this past week by sweeping Gonzaga and Portland. Along the way, the Toreros also picked up wins over nationally-ranked Oklahoma, long-time national power Long Beach State as well as regional powers New Mexico, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.
In the most recent RPI rankings, dated Nov. 16, the Toreros checked in as the highest rated WCC school at No. 14. With this rating and a No. 16 national ranking by the AVCA, the Toreros will now await the NCAA selection show to be aired live on ESPNU on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. to learn who and where the Toreros will open play in the NCAA Tournament to begin Nov. 30.
USD is hoping with the No. 14 RPI as well as a 21-7 overall record plus a conference championship, that they will once again receive a national seed in the NCAA Tournament as well has have a chance at hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
