San Diego Women's Volleyball Heads to Los Angeles for NCAA Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 18th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team has learned it will play Long Beach State University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this Friday at 5 p.m. in Los Angeles. The two other teams in the bracket are No. 6 USC and the University of New Mexico. This marks the Toreros' 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and the 10th in the last 11 seasons. Should USD defeat LBSU, they will advance on to play the winner of the USC and New Mexico match on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Toreros are coming off a regular-season in which they claimed the West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record, while posting an overall record of 23-5. USD is paced by the WCC Player of the Year in senior right side Ali Troost, who just took home her second consecutive Player of the Year honors after leading the team in kills with 384 and hit for a .334 clip. The Toreros also feature the WCC Freshman of the Year in middle hitter Chloe Ferrari, who set the USD single-season hitting percentage record at .417, racked up 277 kills and was also named first-team All-WCC. The Toreros also feature three other players, Amy Mahinalani DeGroot, Kelsi Myers and C'era Oliveira, who all took home All-WCC honors. USD is under the direction of the WCC Coach of the Year Jennifer Petrie.

Long Beach State enters the tournament with a 25-7 overall record after defeating Seattle University in their regular-season finale. Junior outside hitter Caitlin Ledoux leads the team's offense as she has 451 kills (3.79 kps), and she is hitting at a .242 clip. Senior setter Ashley Lee directs the team's offense as she has recorded 998 assists, while helping steer the 49ers offense to a .259 attack percentage. USD defeated Long Beach State earlier this season, 3-1, in Long Beach behind DeGroot's 18 kills.

USC enters the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 25-4 after picking up a five-set win over UCLA in the regular-season finale. The Trojans offense is led by Alex Juniper, who has 449 kills (4.36 kps) and is hitting at a .298 clip. Kendall Bateman is the floor leader for the Women of Troy as she has 1,343 assists, in helping direct the team's offense to a .292 attack percentage. USD last faced the Trojans in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, in which USC claimed a 3-1 win.

New Mexico enters the tournament with an overall record of 20-9 after sweeping San Diego State University in the regular-season finale. Lisa Meeter leads the team's offense as she has recorded a team-leading 348 kills (3.38 kps) and is hitting at a .242 clip. The floor leader for the Lobos is Jade Michaelsen, who has recorded 1,067 assists, while helping lead her team to a .220 attack percentage.
