SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego's left-handed outside hitter Kristen Carlson has earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region selection after posting solid numbers for the season and helping lead USD to the 2006 West Coast Conference championship.
The senior from Purcellville, Va., was also named the WCC Player of the year and took home a first-team All-WCC honor this season. For the year, Carlson led the conference with her 5.09 kills per game average and also averaged a team-best 3.47 digs per game. Carlson recorded a conference-leading 23 double-doubles (kills-digs) and was named the WCC Player of the Month for October.
Carlson has etched her named in the San Diego record books. Her 519 kills on the season ranks her fifth in single-season kills at USD, her 354 digs places her 10th at USD in single-season digs and at 1,050 career-kills she ranks ninth all-time at USD. Carlson is also in the single-match records books as she recorded 34 kills in a win against Loyola Marymount to place her third at USD in single-match kills.
Carlson and the 14th-ranked Toreros will return to action on Friday as they compete in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament against top-ranked Nebraska in Gainesville, Fla. The match is set for a 1:30 p.m. start and will be web streamed live on the USD athletic website.
