BYU Opens NCAA Volleyball Final Four Thursday vs. Texas

  • For the fourth straight season, the WCC sent multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament. The four teams receiving 2014 berths - BYU, Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Santa Clara - were the most since six (of nine) WCC programs qualified in 2012.
  • Since 1986, the West Coast Conference has sent multiple teams into the NCAA Tournament 19 times, including a league-record six (of eight total teams) in 2003 and 2012 (of nine total).
  • Through December 14, WCC teams own a 67.2 winning percentage (84-41) vs. non-conference foes. The West Coast Conference ranks fourth among Division I conferences in attack percentage (23.1).
  • BYU leads all of Division I in total blocks (441.5) and blocks per set (3.87) and rates eight nationally in hitting percentage (27.8) and sixth in opponent hitting percentage (14.6).
  • BYU’s Jennifer Hamson ranks in the top-25 among active Division I leaders in kills (17th/1,554), total blocks (16th/485) and blocks per set (12th/1.15). Hamson needs one block to crack the WCC Top-10 career list.
  • BYU’s Whitney Young leads Division I in blocks per set (1.92) and teammates Amy Boswell is second (1.67) and Hamson is 26th (1.35).
  • Gonzaga’s Savannah Blinn ranks in the top-25 nationally among active NCAA Division I leaders in kills per set (13th/4.08), while Pacific’s Gillian Howard is among total blocks leaders (23rd/453) and blocks per set (7th/1.25).
  • Santa Clara’s Kirsten Mead, the 2014 WC Freshman of the Year, ranks second among Division I leaders in assists (11.94). *All stats as of 12/15/14


  • Current West Coast Conference members have made a total of 10 Final Four appearances: BYU (2), Pacific (7, last 1999) and Santa Clara (1, 2005).
  • Pacific won back-to-back NCAA titles (1985-86) and owns the 12th best NCAA Tournament winning percentage (65.7).
  • Pepperdine’s sand volleyball program has won two of three AVCA National Championships (2012 and 2014).
  • The most recent WCC program to win a Fall NCAA championship was Portland women’s soccer (2002 & 2005).
  • The most recent WCC-sponsored program to win a NCAA Championship was Pepperdine Men’s Tennis (2006).
  • The most recent WCC program to advance to a Final Four in a team sport was Pepperdine men’s tennis (2012). The last WCC fall sports team to advance to a Final Four was Portland women’s soccer in 2005.
  • Pepperdine men’s volleyball program has won five NCAA Championships, most recently in 2005 as an MPSF member.
