WCC Runners of the Month (Oct.) Announced

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has announced the WCC Men’s and Women’s Runners of the Month for October. 

WEST COAST CONFERENCE MEN’S RUNNER OF THE MONTH (OCTOBER): ALEX SHORT, SR. – SAN FRANCISCO
USF senior Alex Short raced to new heights in the month of October, becoming just the second Don to earn the men's cross country individual WCC title on Oct. 28, racing to an 8,000 meter time of 24:19.4 to secure the victory. 

Not only did he close the month with a bang, but he opened it with gusto as well, earning seventh at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational with a season-best 8K of 24:11.2 on the national stage. Along with the conference championship victory, the native of Bicknacre, England, has now recorded three Top-10 individual finishes this season and helped the men post a third-place finish at the WCCs and a steady presence in the West Region's top 10 teams.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE WOMEN’S RUNNER OF THE MONTH (OCTOBER): LAUREN LAROCCO, JR. – PORTLAND
A few weeks ago at the 2016 West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships, Junior Lauren LaRocco ran away from the field to win the individual title, earning All-WCC First Team Honors. LaRocco captures her second straight WCC Runner of the Month honor of 2016. 

LaRocco helped lead Portland women to their 20th WCC team title, their first since 2008. This win also marked the 10th time that the Pilots have won both the team and individual crowns in the same year, and the first since Dana Morgan led Portland in 2007. 

Earlier in the month LaRocco also placed ninth overall at NCAA Pre-Nationals helping the then- No. 5 Pilots earned a collective fourth place finish with 196 points, which was just 17 points shy of Michigan who finished third. 

LaRocco has helped Portland maintain a top-10 national ranking as well as a No. 3 rank in the West. Her individual title win at the WCCs also earned her an individual national ranking of No.7 on Saucony Flo50 Women’s Individual XC Rankings.
