WCC Runners of the Month (Sept.) Announced

CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL 

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has announced the WCC Men’s and Women’s Runners of the Month for September. The 2016 WCC Cross Country Championships are set for Friday, October 28 at Tecolote Shores Park in San Diego. 

WEST COAST CONFERENCE MEN’S RUNNER OF THE MONTH (SEPTEMBER): NICO MONTANEZ SR. – BYU
Senior Nico Montanez was the top finisher in the Cougars’ first two meets of the season—the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah, and the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Virginia. 

Montanez won the BYU Autumn Classic, finishing with a time of 20:11.1. Two weeks later, Montanez was the first BYU finisher and the fourth finisher overall (23:53.8) at the Panorama Farms Invitational, a meet in which he propelled his team to a first place finish over defending national champ Syracuse and ranked teams Stanford and Virginia. Montanez was one of four BYU athletes that finished in the top-10. Following their victory at Virginia, the Cougars were ranked No. 1 overall by Flotrack.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE WOMEN’S RUNNER OF THE MONTH (SEPTEMBER): LAUREN LAROCCO, JR. – PORTLAND
Junior Lauren LaRocco also led the Portland Pilots to a first place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational on September 24th. With a third place finish overall (21:30), she helped the Pilots beat out seven other ranked teams, including three top 10 teams in that week's rankings. Portland had a dominant team score of 74, more than 50 points ahead of No. 9 Michigan State in second place.

Previously ranked at No.30 in the USTFCCCA National Polls and No.6 in the West Region, this win sent the Pilots soaring up to No.7 nationally and to a No.3 spot in the West. In this week’s rankings they continued to rise to No.5 nationally and No.2 in the West. The No.7 and No.5 national rankings mark a program best in Pilot history for the women. LaRocco after the Griak Invite win, reached a high by ranking sixth in the national individual rankings on FloTrack.
