WCC Tennis Programs Honored For Academic Success

SAN BRUNO - A record eight West Coast Conference tennis programs and 39 student-athletes have been named 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes. 

Five WCC women's programs were represented while three men's programs earned the top academic distcintion. A total of 21 WCC women student-athletes earned individual honors alongside 18 WCC men student-athletes.

Women's teams earning ITA All-Academic Team honors were the WCC regular season and tournament champion Pepperdine Waves as well as Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, San Diego and Santa Clara. The Waves, Gaels, Toreros and Broncos each also had four individual earn the Scholar Athlete titles while the Bulldogs and Loyola Marymount had two individuals named each.

Men's teams earning ITA All-Academic Team honors were Gonzaga, Pacific and San Francisco. The Tigers had a WCC-best six student-athletes earn Scholar Athlete status while the Dons had five and the Bulldogs had three selections. Additionally, BYU and Pepperdine each had two individuals earn Scholar Athlete honors.

Last season saw a combined total of five WCC teams and 19 WCC student-athletes earn the ITA academic honors.

ABOUT THE ITA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016). 

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
