WEST COAST CONFERENCE BASKETBALL QUICK HITS

  • Sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis of Gonzaga was named WCC Player of the Week.  RELEASE
  • #WCChoops columnist John Crumpacker (@crumpackeronwcc) preveiws the start of the 2015-16 WCC league season. STORY
  • Saint Mary’s offense is running efficiently during the non-conference. The Gaels rank in the top-10 in several national team offensive categories: field goal percentage (1st/54.6%), 3-point field goal percentage (2nd/47.7%), 3-pointers (3rd/11.7), assist/turnover (1st/2.11) and assists per game (4th/21.3).
  • Portland ranks sixth in 3-pointers (119) and 11th in 3-point attempts (310). Saint Mary’s ranks eighth in scoring margin (23.1), ninth in scoring defense (58.7) and Gonzaga is 22nd (61.1) defensively. 
  • Three WCC student-athletes cracked 2015-16 preseason major individual awards watch lists. BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth is on the Bob Cousy Award list (top point guard), Gonzaga’s Przemek Karnowski is on the Kareem Abdul-Jabaar Award list (top center) and Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer is on the Karl Malone Award list (top power forward).
  • Pepperdine senior forward Stacy Davis ranks 23rd among active career Division I scoring leaders (1,466 points). Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer (28th/1,376), Santa Clara’s Jared Brownridge (36th/1,303) and BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth (46th/1,285) also crack the top-50.
  • In addition to being the NCAA career triple-doubles leader (8), BYU senior guard Kyle Collinsworth ranks eighth nationally among active care2er rebound leaders (826), while Pepperdine’s Davis is 11th (796).
  • San Diego senior center Jito Kok ranks eighth among active career Division I blocked shots leaders (221). 
  • BYU senior guard Chase Fischer ranks fourth among active career Division I 3-pointer leaders (130/2.95), while Santa Clara junior guard Jared Brownridge is sixth (219/2.84). 
  • Gonzaga senior forward Kyle Wiltjer was named Preseason National Player of the Year by CBSSports.com. 

WEST COAST CONFERENCE BASKETBALL QUICK HITS

  • Saint Mary’s set a program record with 19 3-pointers in a win against Cal Poly (12/14/15), tied for the most in Division I (as of 12/15/15).
  • The WCC went 11-3 in its final week of non-conference play (12/ 14-19).
  • A WCC student-athlete connected on at least seven 3-pointers in a non-conference game on seven occasions. Portland’s Bryce Pressley had a legue-best seven vs. Oregon Tech (11/13/15). Santa Clara’s Jared Brownridge has twice connected on seven triples, vs. Arizona (11/26/15) and at Nevada (12/18/15).
  • Three WCC student-athletes dished 11 assists during non-conference games: Portland’s Alec Wintering (Oregon Tech, 11/13/15), BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth (Utah State, 12/9/15) and Saint Mary’s Emmett Naar (Cal Poly, 12/14/15).
  • San Diego’s Jito Kok set a new program single-game blocked shots record with nine against UC Davis (12/15/15). The conference modern record is 11 by Pepperdine’s Jarrad Henry vs. Portland (2/5/07).
