BYU Men Earn 6th Place Finish at the 2012 Division I NCAA Cross Country Championships, Portland Men Finish 12th

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- BYU and Portland earned top-12 finishes at the 2012 Division I NCAA Cross Country Championships at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park Course in Louisville, Ky. Junior Jared Ward led the Cougars with a 14th-place finish and sophomore Scott Fauble paced the Pilots with a 26th-place finish in the 10K race. Loyola Marymount's Sheree Shea, competing as an individual in the women's race, finished in 181st place.

Finishing with a total of 245 points, the Cougars came in behind Oklahoma State (72), Wisconsin (135), Colorado (158), Northern Arizona (191) and Florida State (238). Ward finished first for the Cougars and 14th overall in the 10K, with a time of 29:33.40.

Coming in sixth, the Cougars claimed their second consecutive top-10 finish, following up a fourth place finish in the 2011 NCAA championships.

Juniors Tylor Thatcher and Conner Peloquin came in second and third for the Cougars and 34th and 62nd overall with times of 29:58.00 and 30:36.70, respectively. Junior Thomas Gruenewald and Steve Flint rounded out fourth and fifth for BYU, sol-difying an impressive team finish with the top-five Cougars all finishing in the top 110. Both Ward and Thatcher earned All-American status.



Portland's Fauble saved his best for last, clocking a season-best 29:50.80 in today's championships to finish 26th overall, becoming the 11th Pilot to earn All-American status.

The Pilots finished with four runners in the top-125, as sophomore Woody Kincaid placed 57th with a time of 30:23.30, senior Lars Erik Malde placed 115th in 30:52.50, and sophomore David Perry was 124th with a time of 30:56.70. Rounding out the race for the Pilots was freshman Jacob Smith (31:06.00/149th).

This marks the tenth time the program has placed among the top-15. Portland's best team finish at the National Championship is seventh, done in 2001 and 2007. The Pilots have never gone more than two straight years without an NCAA appearance.

Loyola Marymount senior Sheree Shea, competing as an individual, finished 181st overall with a time of 21:23.20. Shea finished 11th at the NCAA West Regional to earn an individual spot in the NCAA Championships, and USTFCCCA All-Region honors. Shea finished 3rd at the WCC Championships in Portland, Ore.
