Game One Notes and Quotes

May 26, 2006

Pepperdine Head Coach Steve Rodriguez

On the game: "It was a great game. We made some mistakes and USF was able to capitalize on them. I think our guys did a good job overall, but we had that one bad inning. If we can eliminate the big inning, I think we'll be alright."

On Saturday's game: "Obviously, we've got to get a win. I told our guys that we're in a tough spot, but we're used to that. We've been in difficult spots like this before, and it's not good, but if we play like we can and minimize our mistakes then we can show what we're capable of."

San Francisco Head Coach Nino Giarratano

On the game: "It was a wonderful game, especially from an exposure standpoint. To have such a fantastic game on television was great for both of these teams and for the West Coast Conference as a whole. It was pretty much what we expected, a back and forth game with several lead changes, but we just kept playing hard and came out with the win. I feel like both of these teams can move on to the postseason and do some real damage in a regional."

On Saturday's game: "It will be a battle between two outstanding lefties. We have Aaron Poreda going, and Pepperdine's Paul Coleman is one of the league's most experienced pitchers. Poreda is most effective when he puts his fastball where he needs to and is one of the ERA leaders in the WCC, while Coleman is always tough to hit. It should make for a great pitching match up."

On the USF bullpen: "We were fortunate in that we only had to use Patrick McGuigan for four outs in relief today. He'll be able to come back tomorrow if we need him. Our bullpen has been great all year, and we have a lot of confidence in all of our pitchers."

  • Patrick McGuigan earned the victory in today's game, moving him into a tie with Dana Henershott (1968-71) for first place on the USF career victories list with 22.
  • Today's win is the first ever for USF as a ranked team.
  • Saturday's game will begin at 12:00 PM (PDT), and will be televised live on FSN Bay Area, Northwest, and West2.
  • This year marks the first time that the WCC Championship Series has been hosted in the Bay Area.
