Saint Mary’s Waldichuk (Pitcher) & Portland’s Brundage (Player) Collect Rawlings WCC Weekly Honors
Waldichuck Ks 22 in 13 with no earned runs; Brundage bats .500 with seven RBI
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Rawlings Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 12, 2018.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PITCHER OF THE WEEK – KEN WALDICHUK, SO., LHP – SAINT MARY’S
Sophomore lefthander Ken Waldichuk won both of his starts during the week, posting double-digit strikeouts in both games to tie or set new career marks while not allowing a single earned run and posting a 0.85 WHIP.
Waldichuk earned the Gaels a series split on the road at Pac-12 Conference member Washington State Sunday, setting a new career high with 12 strikeouts and carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. After the first two WSU batters reached via free passes, he would go on to retire 16 of the next 17 he faced with nine Ks, a two-out walk in the third being the only blemish in that streak. He threw seven shutout innings, only allowing two hits.
Waldichuk also struck out 10 and walked just one in Monday's series finale versus two-time defending Big East Conference Tournament champion Xavier, completing the Gaels' three-game sweep. After an unearned run in the first inning, Waldichuk settled in to scatter three hits over six innings. Only one runner made it to third base against Waldichuk after the first, and he only got there via a two-base error and a groundout.
For the week, Waldichuk went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (only 1 unearned run), 22 strikeouts and just five hits allowed in 13 innings of work with a 0.85 WHIP.
Also Nominated: Casey Legumina, Gonzaga; Riley Ornido, San Francisco; Codie Paiva, Loyola Marymount; Nick Shur, Portland; Nick Sprengel, San Diego; Jordan Wood, BYU
WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – BEAU BRUNDAGE, SO., OF – PORTLAND
Sophomore outfielder Beau Brundage was on fire at the plate, extending his hitting streak to a career-long 15 games, as the Pilots earned a four-game split with UC Irvine at Joe Etzel Field. For the week, which also included a game at No. 1 Oregon State on Tuesday, he was 10-for-20 (.500) with three doubles, three walks, seven RBI’s, and three runs scored. During Portland’s win over the Anteaters on Saturday, Brundage drove in three runs as the Pilots claimed a 6-3 win. The sophomore outfielder saved his best for Sunday, when he went 3-for-4 and provided a clutch, two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. His hard-hit line drive to center field pushed the Pilots ahead 7-6, and they’d close out the win in the ninth to earn the series split. Brundage also stole a base, and he threw out two runners on the base paths from center field.
