COMPLETE LMU RELEASE
After a pair of scoreless innings, Gonzaga got on the board first with an unearned run in the third. Nicholas Minteer got the inning going with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Welmon got a ground ball on the ensuing play, but the throw from Ted Boeke at third sailed wide of the bag at first and allowed runners to move to second and third. Caleb Wood took advantage of the opportunity, punching a run-scoring ground ball to shortstop to break the stalemate.
The second time around the order proved fruitful for the Lions as David Fletcher reached with a one-out single before coming around to score the tying run on an RBI-double down the right field line off the bat of Tanner Donnels. After a pop out for the second out, junior Jimmy Jack came up with a clutch two-strike two-out RBI-single into left centerfield to hand LMU the lead at 2-1.
Jack, a native of Granite Bay, Calif., finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI.
The Lions extended the lead to 5-1 after six by way of three runs on three hits, including a two-RBI double from Jack. A one-out walk to Donnels got the inning moving before Cole Trezek placed a perfect drag bunt down the third base line to push runners to first and second. Jack wasted no time delivering the blow, grounding a ball just inside the bag at first base to send the runners around the bags and in to score. Senior Kevin Garcia capped the scoring run two plays later, shooting a single back up the middle and into centerfield to drive in Jack from second base and make it a four-run game.
