STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team held on to claim a 5-4 win over Brigham Young University Friday afternoon in an elimination game at Banner Island Ballpark in the West Coast Conference Tournament.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 33-21 overall and advance on to another elimination game this evening against the loser of the Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount game at 7:30 p.m. With the loss, the Cougars finish their season with a 28-25 overall record.

After the Cougars took a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the ninth, there was no panic on the Toreros faces, as they simply put on their rally caps and went to work. Ben Wylly led off the frame with a solo home run to right field, the third of the game for USD, and until this point generated all Toreros runs in the game. Riley Adams kept things going with a stand-up double, and moved to third on a Grant Melker infield bunt single. Jarod Smith then hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Adams and giving USD the lead back. USD then capped their scoring on a Kyle Holder RBI sacrifice bunt single to give USD a 5-3 lead.

BYU then made things really interesting in the bottom half of the ninth. The Cougars managed to get their first two batters on and both of them into scoring position with no outs. USD closer Anthony McIver then went to work, and got the next batter to pop up, followed by a RBI groundout, and the final Cougar grounded out to second base to give USD the 5-4 win.

San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the fifth inning, Adams launched his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to give USD a 1-0 lead.

BYU answered right back in the bottom half of the fifth, as the scored an unearned run. With runners at second and third, Curt Iorg hit a rolling RBI single up the middle to even push across an unearned run, to even up the score at 1-all.

BYU then went on to score one run in the sixth and eighth innings, while USD scored one in the top of the eighth to round off the scoring for the day.

Offensively for the Toreros, Bryson Brigman led the way, as he went 4-for-5, while Holder, Adams, and Wylly all hit home runs.

McIver (2-3) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. BYU's Kolton Mahoney (4-8) was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as he allowed three runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.
