San Diego Crowned WCC tournament Champions
May 25, 2013
STOCKTON, Calif. --- Behind a masterful pitching performance from freshman left-hander Troy Conyers, the University of San Diego baseball team claimed the West Coast Conference Tournament championship with a 2-0 win over the University of San Francisco Saturday evening at Banner Island Ballpark.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 35-23 overall and will now await the NCAA selection show on Monday at 9 a.m. on ESPNU to learn, who, where and when they will begin postseason play. With the loss, the Dons finish the regular season at 33-22.
Conyers (2-2), in his first collegiate start, completely dominated the Dons, as he allowed no runs, on just two hits, while striking out a career-high nine batters. Conyers is only the second USD pitcher this season to toss a complete game shutout. USF's Christian Cecilio (3-3) was saddled with the loss for the Dons as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Offensively for the Toreros, Austin Green led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Kris Bryant also went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Austin Green got things started with a double to left center. Andrew Daniel then drove in Green with a RBI single to right center to give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then doubled their lead in the bottom of the third inning, as they scored one run on two hits. Much like the first inning, with two outs, USD got things going with a Connor Joe stand-up double to left field. Green then drove in Joe with an RBI single to left centerfield to give USD a 2-0 lead.
