WCC Duo Named Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason All-Americans
Milam and Sprengel Represent WCC on Preseason All-American Teams

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference placed two student-athletes on Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Preseason All-American Team on Monday.
Saint Mary's Kevin Milam, who was named last year's West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, made the First Team as a Utility Player after hitting .313 last year with 12 home runs while recording nine saves with a 2.27 ERA. Collegiate Baseball also tagged the sophomore as a Third Team All-American last season.
San Diego pitcher Nick Sprengel was the other WCC representative, coming off a 9-1 record with a 3.29 ERA and 86 strikeouts. Sprengel made the All-WCC Second Team while Milam made the All-WCC Second and Freshman teams.
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Saint Mary's baseball's Kevin Milam received his first honor for the 2018 season Monday before the 2017 calendar has even concluded, as he was named a 2018 Preseason First Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The two-way star could not have had a bigger breakout year for the Gaels than the one he had in 2017, his first year playing at the collegiate level. and he was recognized handsomely for it. Milam was named an All-American seven times, as well as being named the 2017 WCC Freshman of the Year. He was twice named an overall All-American third teamer (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball.com) and was named a first team Freshman All-American five times (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball.com, NCBWA, Perfect Game).
He was also placed on the all-WCC Second Team and the all-WCC Freshmen Team. Milam batted .313 with 12 home runs (three grand slams), 14 doubles and 55 RBIs. He slugged a team-high .547 and added 45 runs scored, 23 walks and a .397 on-base percentage. On the mound, Milam led SMC with 22 appearances -- all in relief. He posted a 3-1 record and 2.27 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings pitched. He limited opponents to a .191 batting average while only allowing 10 earned runs.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Nick Sprengel was named a preseason second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the publication revealed Monday morning.
The junior lefty was an All-WCC First Team selection last season after posting a 9-1 record with a 3.29 ERA. His win-loss mark tied a Torero record for best in a single season.
Sprengel struck out 86 batters and walked just 33 in 82.0 innings last season, while holding opposing hitters to a .244 average.
Sprengel played for the USA Collegiate National Team over the summer, showing off his electrifying stuff on an international stage. For the second year in a row, Sprengel will be the Toreros’ Friday starter.
