Nevarez Appointed to NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee

May 9, 2018

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- West Coast Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez was appointed to the prestigious 12-member NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee. Nevarez will begin her two-year term in July.

Nevarez’ appointment ensures that the West Coast Conference continues to be represented at the highest level in the NCAA framework. With more than a decade of direct oversight at both the institutional level (University of Oklahoma) and at the conference level (Pac-12), Nevarez is well versed on the issues facing men’s basketball. Most recently Nevarez oversaw the growth and development of the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Championship.

"I am honored to serve on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee," Nevarez said. "The Committee's focus and initiatives on maintaining the integrity of the game, enhancing the student-athlete experience and the Championship are significant issues relating to the future of men's basketball. I look forward to representing the West Coast Conference and Division I Council in this capacity."

BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe served on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Selection Committee, wrapping up his tenure in 2016-17 and former WCC commissioner Lynn Holzman served on the Oversight Committee last year.

Last season, the West Coast Conference enjoyed national exposure featuring two top-25 programs -- Gonzaga University and Saint Mary's College – which concluded the regular season ranked in the national polls. It marks the second straight season the Bulldogs and Gaels accomplished the feat.

Gonzaga's remarkable streak of 20 consecutive NCAA postseason berths provides an exclamation point for a conference with a long and storied history of basketball prominence.

Consider the following:
Since 2010, West Coast Conference programs have produced...
1 -- AP Coach of the Year
1 -- NCAA Elite 90 Award Winner
1 -- Final Four
2 -- Elite Eight Appearances
5 -- Sweet-16 berths
9 -- NBA Championships won by WCC alums
10 -- WCC programs to compete in at least one Postseason Tournament
12 -- Academic All-Americans
15 -- AP All-Americans
18 -- NCAA Tournament Wins
59 -- Overall Postseason Victories
