WCC Announces 2010-11 Men's Basketball ESPN Package, Conference Schedule
Aug. 17, 2010
SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The West Coast Conference has released its 2010-11 men's basketball conference schedule and 24-game national television package as announced by the ESPN family of networks. "Our unique relationship with ESPN is essential to our efforts to raise the national profile of the West Coast Conference and our institutions," West Coast Conference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. "In addition to having a weekly slot on `Thursday Night Showcase' during the conference season, we are pleased that our institutions will have the chance to take on some of the elite programs in the nation on the ESPN family of networks." There will be a total of 17 conference games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU in 2010-11, including the Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championship semifinals on ESPN2 on Sunday, March 6 and the championship game on ESPN on Monday, March 7. The West Coast Conference will once again be a centerpiece to ESPN's Thursday night coverage with weekly time slots on both ESPN2 and ESPNU in January and February. The WCC's "Thursday Night Showcase" coverage will be highlighted by a pair of matchups between 2009-10 conference regular season champion Gonzaga, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and defending Zappos.com WCC Basketball Tournament Champion and NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Saint Mary's. The Bulldogs will host the Gaels on Thursday, Jan. 27 and will pay a visit to Saint Mary's on the final weekend of the regular season on Thursday, February 24. Conference play tips off on Thursday, January 6 as Saint Mary's visits Loyola Marymount on ESPNU. The first of seven WCC regular season conference games on ESPN2 will be on Thursday, January 13 as Portland hosts Loyola Marymount in a matchup between two programs that reached the postseason in 2009-10. In addition to the 17-game conference package, ESPN has announced the broadcast of seven non-conference games that are a part of the conference's national television package. Additional WCC non-conference games (tournaments, special events and/or road games) on the ESPN family of networks will be announced at a later date.
Gonzaga leads the way with four non-conference exposures as a part of the WCC package with contests against Illinois (December 4 in Seattle; ESPN), Xavier (December 22; ESPN2), Oklahoma State (December 31; ESPN2), and Memphis (Feb. 5; ESPN or ESPN2). In addition, Saint Mary's will host St. John's as part of the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon on November 16, Portland will take on Kentucky at the Rose Garden on ESPNU on November 19 and Loyola Marymount will host Florida State on ESPNU on December 18. Additional national and regional men's basketball telecasts will be arranged and announced by the conference and its member institutions in the fall. The dates and times of these broadcasts will be posted on wccsports.com as they become available.
