After a record-setting season, Saint Mary's picked to win the title.
Oct. 19, 2017
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- With the 2017-18 basketball campaign just over four weeks away, Saint Mary's College was a unanimous preseason favorite to win the West Coast Conference regular season title in the annual poll of the WCC's 10 head coaches. The Gaels received the maximum nine first place votes and 81 points. The poll and the all-conference team were announced Thursday at Orleans Arena -- site of the 2018 WCC Basketball Championships -- as part of the Seventh Annual West Coast Conference Basketball Tip-Off event streamed live on TheW.tv.
Saint Mary's has appeared in virtually every preseason poll prognostication entering the 2017-18 season along with longtime nemesis Gonzaga. Fresh off the first Final Four appearance in program history and a 2017 NCAA National Runner-Up showing, the Bulldogs were tabbed second earning 73 points and the remaining first place vote. The Gaels (17) and Gonzaga (20) both appear in the 2017-18 Blue Ribbon Preseason Top-25.
Saint Mary's (29-5, 16-2 WCC) earned an at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round before bowing to No. 2 Arizona. The Gaels return four starters from last season's highly efficient squad, headlined by Blue Ribbon Preseason First Team All-American Jock Landale. The Australian senior averaged 16.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 blocked shots per game and is joined on the preseason All-WCC team by senior forward Calvin Hermanson and senior guard Emmett Naar.
Gonzaga University (37-2, 17-1 WCC) won its 16th regular season title in 17 years and made its 19th straight NCAA Tournament appearance en route to the first Final Four for the WCC since 1957. Senior forward Johnathan Williams, the 2017 San Jose Regional Most Outstanding Player and junior guard Josh Perkins earned spots on the Preseason All-WCC Team.
Brigham Young University (22-12, 12-6 WCC) was picked third in the WCC preseason poll with 62 points following a season capped with an NIT bid. For the second straight season, two Cougar sophomores made the preseason squad: forward Yoeli Childs and guard TJ Haws.
University of San Francisco (20-13, 10-8 WCC) was picked fourth in the survey with 59 points and qualified for the 2017 CBI Postseason despite being picked ninth in last year's prognostications. Sophomore forward Charles Minlend landed a spot on the preseason all-conference team for the Dons.
Santa Clara University (17-16, 10-8 WCC) rounded out the top-five with 44 points. Sophomore guard KJ Feagin, a preseason selection, will lead the charge for the Broncos. The University of San Diego was tabbed sixth with 37 points. The Toreros will be led by junior guard and preseason all-conference honoree Olin Carter III.
Pepperdine University was selected seventh with 30 points, followed by the University of the Pacific in eighth with 24 points. The University of Portland (21) and Loyola Marymount University (19 points) round out the preseason poll.
