Coaches tab Santa Clara to capture WCC men's soccer championship
Aug 23, 2013
SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Santa Clara University has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 West Coast Conference men's soccer title. In a preseason poll of the WCC's seven head coaches, the Broncos captured 47 overall points in the poll along with a first place vote. Competition is expected to be tough in 2013, as the first through fifth place teams in the poll all received at least one first place vote and the five squads are separated by just nine points in the poll.
2012 West Coast Conference champion and Elite Eight participant University of San Diego was picked to finish second in this year's poll. The Toreros earned 45 points and two first place votes. Loyola Marymount University garnered a pair of first place votes and 44 points to finish third in the survey. The University of San Francisco (41 points) and Saint Mary's College (38 points) each earned a first place vote and were picked fourth and fifth, respectively. The University of Portland (34 points) and Gonzaga University (six points) round out the survey.
Six WCC schools are represented on the preseason All-West Coast Conference team, led by San Francisco's three selections. The 2013 season begins on Friday, August 30, with all seven West Coast Conference teams in action. The teams will play a 12-game, double round robin schedule in 2013.
