WCC Co-Players of the Week: Scott Barnum, Gonzaga University & Patrick Sampson, Loyola Marymount University
Two goalkeepers took home WCC Player of the Week honors: Gonzaga University's Scott Barnum and Loyola Marymount's Patrick Sampson. Despite losing two matches, Barnum made a career and season-high 12 saves to become Gonzaga's all-time single-season saves leader with 92, surpassing the 91 of Mike McCarthy in 2002. On Sunday at San Diego, the Toreros took 14 shots, eight on goal and the match was decided on a penalty kick in overtime. Barnum had seven saves to run his Gonzaga career-leading saves total to 99, which also leads the WCC this year. Barnum also has four shutouts on the season.
Sampson helped LMU climb from last place in the WCC into a third place tie by making three saves to shut out Gonzaga as LMU rallied from a 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 victory. The three saves put him at 100 for his career. On Sunday, Sampson recorded his fifth career clean sheet, and first of the season, making two saves to blank Portland. With the wins, LMU has topped last season's overall and WCC win totals, putting the Lions one victory shy of their first 10-win season since 2004.
Player of the Month, October 2009: Patrick Wallen, Fr., F, San Diego
Freshman forward Patrick Wallen led San Diego to a 7-1-0 overall and conference record in October, as well as a 3-1-0 record at home and an undefeated 4-0-0 mark on the road. He finished with four goals and three assists for 11 points.
Wallen recorded 19 shots and 10 shots on goal for a .526 SOG%. He had two game winning goals, the first on October 4th versus USF at Torero Stadium in San Diego's conference opener and the second on October 16th against Saint Mary's at home. His third and fourth goals were against Loyola Marymount, the first at home and the other on the road. Wallen also tallied one assist at Portland and two at Loyola Marymount.
Wallen has been involved in seven of the team's 17 goals in October and was a key factor in San Diego entering major national polls as a ranked team.
