San Diego's Seamus McFadden is WCC Coach of the Year
Nov. 13, 2012
SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego finished the conference season with a 9-3-0 mark to win the West Coast Conference title on the final Friday of the season and Seamus McFadden was recognized as the 2012 WCC Coach of the Year, as voted on by the league's seven head coaches. Santa Clara senior Erik Hurtado is the WCC Player of the Year. Saint Mary's senior Trevor Newquist is the WCC Defensive Player of the Year. Larry Jackson, a senior from Santa Clara, is the Goalkeeper of the Year and Loyola Marymount forward Pedro Velazquez is the Freshman of the Year in the conference.
Hurtado's Player of the Year honor breaks a three-year streak in which the Toreros won the award. He led the West Coast Conference with 2.08 points per game, 0.83 goals, 0.42 assists per match and five total game-winning goals in conference play. He consistently ranked among the NCAA's top-10 in scoring this season. Hurtado is the first Bronco since Peter Lowry in 2007 to be voted Player of the Year. He is also the sixth SCU men's soccer player to win the award (Hurtado 2012, Lowry '07, Mehdi Ballouchy '05, Jeff Stewart '01, Paul Holocher 1990, Jeff Baicher '89).
Newquist anchored a Saint Mary's defense that had four shutouts during conference play. He also finished in the top-10 in the WCC with 0.73 points per game in WCC contests. Newquist is the first Gael to be named Defensive POY since Jordan Grider in 2009.
In the second year that the award has been handed out, Santa Clara senior Larry Jackson is the WCC Goalkeeper of the Year. In conference play, Jackson led the WCC with a 0.70 goals against average and six shutouts.
LMU's Pedro Velazquez is the WCC Freshman of the Year and was also named to the All-West Coast Conference Second Team. He is the only freshman to receive all-WCC honors this season. Velazquez helped the Lions finish the season with a five-match unbeaten streak. He was fifth in the conference with four goals in WCC action.
After leading USD to its first conference championship since 2009, Seamus McFadden was named the WCC Coach of the Year. This is the eighth time that McFadden has received the honor, his last coming in 2000 when he won three in a row from 1998 to 2000.
The Toreros will head north to Cal State Northridge on Thursday, November 15 for a first-round NCAA Tournament matchup against the Matadors. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. PST.
