WCC Men's Tennis Teams Start 2013 in Strong Fashion

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- With the 2013 season well underway, WCC teams have started off on a strong note. Overall, the Conference is a combined 28-17 with wins over several ranked opponents including #17 Texas, #38 Boise State, and #44 Columbia.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • Defending WCC Champion Pepperdine was picked to repeat in 2013 in a vote by all nine WCC head coaches. 2011 Champion San Diego was picked to finish second, followed by Santa Clara and BYU. All four teams are currently ranked in the ITA rankings. San Francisco, Saint Mary's, Loyola Marymount, Portland and Gonzaga rounded out the poll.

  • Pepperdine is the only undefeated team left in the Conference. The Waves have defeated four ranked opponents, including #17 Texas. Senior Sebastian Fanselow, currently the #6 singles player in the country, is 4-1 this spring, while fellow senior Finn Tearney is 5-0.

  • BYU has been the most active team in the conference, having already played eight matches in 2013. The Cougars' only two losses have come at the hands of Top-20 ranked teams. Meanwhile, WCC Singles Player of the Month Patrick Kawka is 6-0 this spring with each win coming in straight sets.

  • Portland has gotten off to a hot start with a 4-1 dual match record, including three sweeps. The Pilots' top singles player, junior Ratan Gill, is 5-0 thus far this spring.

  • Gonzaga is coming off of dominant 6-1 wins over Portland St. and Lewis-Clark St. before hosting Idaho on Saturday. The Zags' doubles team of Pablo Mosquera Pérez and Alvaro Nazal is currently undefeated this spring at 4-0.
