Feb. 20, 2018

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named Portland’s Mathieu Garcia the West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week and the Pilots duo of Mathieu Garcia and Pierre Garcia the Doubles Team of the Week.

Mathieu Garcia moved into the top spot of the singles lineup last week and posted a 2-0 record. He defeated Army’s Michael Nguyen by a 61-, 7-5 margin on Friday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center to help the Pilots extend their home win streak to 23 matches. Then with a quick turnaround and travel to BYU for Saturday’s West Coast Conference opener, Garcia defeated Jeffrey Hsu in three sets 7-6 (10), 4-6, 6-2. Garcia is now 6-1 in dual singles this spring.

The Portland doubles tandem of brothers Mathieu and Pierre Garcia bumped up to the No. 1 position this week due to injuries and secured a pair of doubles clinching wins for the Pilots. The duo defeated Army’s Michael Nguyen and Greg Shannon by a 6-3 margin to set the tone on Friday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots would go on to sweep the match for their 23rd consecutive home victory.
