WCC Announces 2010-11 Women's Basketball Conference Schedule
Aug. 17, 2010
SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The WCC released its 2010-11 women's basketball schedule today as the conference looks to duplicate a record setting 2009-10 season. A year ago, Gonzaga reached the NCAA Women's "Sweet 16" for the first time in school history and four programs earned trips to the postseason to tie the conference record in that category. Saint Mary's and Pepperdine participated in the WNIT, while Portland qualified for the inaugural WBI. "It was quite an achievement for half of our eight women's basketball programs to reach the postseason last year," West Coast Conference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. "We're looking forward to another exciting conference season, culminating with the Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championships in March." Gonzaga opens defense of its regular season championship when it visits Portland on Saturday, January 8 at the Chiles Center. The Bulldogs play their first three WCC games on the road before hosting Santa Clara on Thursday, January 20. In addition to going 14-0 in conference play and capturing the tournament championship last year, Gonzaga defeated North Carolina and Texas A&M to reach the NCAA Sweet 16. Saint Mary's, which finished second in the conference a year ago, opens the conference season at home against Loyola Marymount on Thursday, January 6. The Gaels then host Pepperdine on January 8 in a matchup of teams that advanced to the WNIT a year ago. The one new coaching face to the WCC in 2010-11 is no stranger to women's basketball. Jennifer Azzi, who is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame for her accomplishments with Stanford University, USA Basketball and the ABL/WNBA, is entering her first season at the University of San Francisco. The Dons open conference play at home against Santa Clara on Saturday, January 8. The season concludes with the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Championship Game on Monday, March 7 at 12:00 p.m. on ESPNU at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Additional women's basketball television exposures will be announced as they become available.
