May 20, 2010
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Jessica Wallace and freshman Danielle Kang continued their strong play at the NCAA Championships on Thursday and helped the Pepperdine women's golf team move up to a tie for 13th place thanks to the third-best team score of the third round.
The fourth and final round is Friday at the par-72 Country Club of Landfall. With a three-round total of 891 (297-306-288), there's still some hope for the Waves to attain a top 10 finish for the ninth time in their 10 NCAA Championships trips. Three teams are tied for ninth place at 885, just six strokes ahead of Pepperdine.
The Waves had an even-par 288 on Thursday. Of the 12 teams that went off in the morning, Pepperdine had the second-best score behind Texas A&M. Of the 12 afternoon teams, only Purdue, which moved into first place at 858 after an 8-under 280, had a better score. The Waves moved up five spots from 18th place.
Wallace (Langley, B.C., Canada), with a 4-under 68, and Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), with a 3-under 69, helped lead the Waves' charge. Wallace birdied five of her first six holes and had a total of eight on the day. Kang had four birdies and just one bogey.
The big rounds moved Kang up to a tie for 10th place with an even-par 216 (74-73-69), while Wallace has gone into a tie for 19th place with a 2-over 218 (78-72-68). Wallace had the Waves' best score for the second straight day. Pepperdine individuals have finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships seven times and both players will attempt to add to that total on Friday.
Additionally, sophomore Lisa McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas) is tied for 84th place at 228 (74-77-77), while junior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) and sophomore Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) are both tied for 110th place at 235. Karle has shot 73-86-76 and Drolson has gone 76-84-75.
For the final round, Pepperdine is paired with Duke and Virginia and they will tee off at 9:06 a.m. ET. Action from the 16th, 17th and 18th holes will streamed online at www.ncaa.com.
