2010 WCC MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP

  • Pepperdine finished with a total score of 887 (290-294-303), just five shots ahead of San Diego, to take home its 17th WCC title.

  • After two days of tough weather conditions, 2010 WCC individual champion Gunner Wiebe of San Diego was the only golfer in the 40-man field to put together an even par score at the WCC Championships at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, CA.

  • Wiebe became the first Torero to win the award outright since Patrick Hawkins did it in 1998. Rounding out the top five were Pepperdine's Carl Smith IV (218), San Francisco's Ji Hwan Park (219), Pepperdine Josh Anderson (220), and Santa Clara's Cory Mehl (221).

  • Santa Clara's Scott Travers earned WCC Player of the Year honors, after finishing the season as the conference's top-ranked player and tied for sixth at the WCC Championships. Travers received an at-large berth into the NCAA Regionals, where he landed in 54th place out of the 75-player field.

  • San Diego's Tim Mickelson was named WCC Coach of the Year. Mickelson has coached his team to the NCAA Regionals in four of the last five seasons and two appearances at the Nationals.

  • Pepperdine and San Diego both competed in the 2010 NCAA Regionals, where the Waves ended their season in 21st place. The Toreros advanced to Nationals after finishing third at the 2010 NCAA West Regional. Wiebe tied for third overall to lead the Toreros to its second consecutive appearance at the 2010 NCAA Championships.

  • San Diego's season ended at the NCAA Championships, where they tied for eighth with Stanford and Arizona State and were forced into a playoff for the last spot in Match Play format. The Cardinal secured the final spot with a sudden death playoff win, ousting the Toreros from the tournament.

  • San Diego's Alex Ching finished tied for second place at the NCAA Championships with an 8-under-par 208 (69-66-73).


    2010 WCC MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP

  • Despite the rain and wind that plagued the WCC Championships, Pepperdine proved its dominance by winning its ninth consecutive WCC title by a total of 32 strokes with a three-round score of 906 (307-293-306).

  • Pepperdine's Lisa McCloskey captured the individual title with a three-round total of 225 (77-74-74). McCloskey became the ninth straight Pepperdine player to win the individual title.

  • Four of the top five spots were taken by Pepperdine golfers. The fourth place spot was secured by 2009 WCC Player of the Year Danielle Cvitanov of San Francisco, who shot a 229 (+13).

  • With the top-10 spots dominated by Pepperdine and San Francisco golfers, Santa Clara's Miki Ueoka and Tamara Surtees secured ninth and 10th place, respectively.

  • Pepperdine swept all three postseason honors as McClockey was named the WCC Player of the Year, Danielle Kang garnered WCC Freshman of the Year, and Coach Laurie Gibbs earned her 10th WCC Coach of the Year award.

  • Pepperdine and San Francisco competed in this year's NCAA Regionals. The Waves qualified for the NCAA Championships for the 10th time in the last 12 years with a seventh place result at the NCAA East Regional, while the Dons ended their season at the NCAA West Regional by landing in 21st place after three rounds.

  • Pepperdine's Danielle Kang posted the Waves' best individual performance at a regional since 2007, finishing in sixth place to pace the Waves at the NCAA East Regional.

  • The Waves ended their season at the NCAA Championships in a tie for 14th with South Carolina. Kang, who was competing in just her sixth collegiate event, again led the Waves by tying for 15th with a 1-over 289. Her result tied for the second-best score relative to par ever recorded by a Pepperdine player at the NCAA Championships.

    2010 Men's Golf Postseason Awards
    Santa Clara junior Scott Travers earned WCC Player of the Year honors. Travers tied for sixth at the WCC Championships, helping his team to a third place team finish behind second place San Diego and 2010 Champion Pepperdine. Travers had five top 5 finishes and nine top-10 finishes in his 11 tournaments this year.

    San Diego's Tim Mickelson was named WCC Coach of the Year after leading his team to a second place finish at the WCC Championships. Mickelson is in his seventh year with the Toreros and has coached his team to the NCAA Regionals in four of the last five seasons and two team appearances at the Nationals.

    Nabbing WCC Freshman of the Year honors was Santa Clara's Rick Lamb. Lamb tallied the lowest score among the entire WCC freshman field at the WCC Championships, earning 15th in the individual tournament with rounds of 72 (E), 81 (+9), and 75 (+3).

    2010 Women's Golf Postseason Awards
    Pepperdine swept the three postseason honors as sophomore Lisa McCloskey, freshman Danielle Kang and Coach Laurie Gibbs were named this year's WCC Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year, respectively. McCloskey shot a nine over par at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in tough, windy conditions to take the top spot, in front of WCC Freshman of the Year Kang.

    McCloskey also finished first at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and tallied five top 20 finishes this season. Kang took second at the WCC Championships, only her fourth collegiate event, with a score of 227 (74-75-78). Kang also placed first at the Bruin Wave Invitational.

    Coach Gibbs took home her 10th WCC Coach of the Year award, leading her team to its 11th Championship title over the last 12 years and 12th consecutive appearance in an NCAA regional. Over the course of Gibbs' career, the Waves have won 34 team tournament titles and have had 36 individual medalist honors.

    SCHOOL TEAM NOTES

  • The Gonzaga men tied for sixth with Portland at the 2010 WCC Championships with a team score of 943. JR Kyle Huus was the top finisher for the Zags, tying for 17th with a three round score of 230.

  • Seniors Derek Cheney and Jason Azzarito ended their collegiate careers at the WCC Championships, tying for 21st and 34th, respectively. Cheney put together a score of 231 over three rounds, while Azzarito posted a total score of 243.

  • The Gonzaga women finished fourth at the WCC Championships with a total score of 981. SO Stephanie Corey was the only Bulldog able to tame the rain and wind, shooting a final-round 78 to finish at 244 and a tie for 13th.

  • Corey and JR Sage Suffecool both earned All-WCC Honorable Mention honors. It was a first all-conference honor for both golfers.

  • The Loyola Marymount men's golf team finished in eighth place at the WCC Championships with a team score of 950.

  • The Lions were led by SO Jake Sarnoff, who despite the tough weather conditions, was able to continue his impressive campaign with another top-20 performance, tying for 17th in the WCC tournament with a total score of 230. On the last day of the tournament, the course became more than 150 yards longer than the first two rounds. Sarnoff was one of just eight players in the 40-man field to post a 73 or less.

  • Senior Blake Nicolai finished his career in a tie with San Diego's Jason Shano for 29th place with a three round score of 235.

  • Rounding out the Lions' scoring was FR Bryan Berna in a tie for 32nd (240), JR John Lim at 37th (245), and FR Boris Stantchev in 40th (263).

  • The Pepperdine men won its league-leading 17th WCC title and first since 2007, edging San Diego by five strokes (887). SR Carl Smith led the Waves with a career-best second place finish. The Waves went on to compete at the NCAA Regionals, where they ended their season in seventh place.

  • Smith, SO Josh Anderson, and JR Andrew Putnam were both selected to the All-WCC team, while Shane Mason received Honorable Mention.

  • SO Lisa McCloskey earned medalist honors after leading her team to its ninth consecutive WCC title. McCloskey and her four teammates--SO Kaitlin Drolson, FR Danielle Kang, JR Taylore Karle, and SO Jessica Wallace--earned a spot on the 2010 All-WCC team.

  • The Pepperdine women went on to place fourth at the NCAA East Regional and tied for 14th at the NCAA Championships. Kang earned All-American honors for her performance.

  • The Portland men ended their season with a seventh place finish at the WCC Championships (943). SR Terence Macatangay ended his collegiate career by leading the Pilots at the tournament by tying for 23rd overall (232).

  • FR Nick Chianello and JR Jake Wagner tied for 27th and were Portland's next top finishers following Macatangay. Chianello, who opened with a team-low round of 74 on Monday, and Wagner both shot a 234.

  • The Portland women's golf team finished fifth at the WCC Championships (995). FR Rachael Fischer paced the Pilots with a final round of 76 to earn an 11th place finish. This was Fischer's first top-15 showing, while her final round score served as the lowest round of her collegiate career.

  • JR Lisa Okazaki and SR Paige Rachor were the next top finishers for the Pilots. Okazaki tallied a three-round score of 246, while Rachor posted a 251 on the tournament.

  • The Saint Mary's men's golf team placed fifth at the WCC Championships with a final three-round total of 302.

  • SR Robert McRae finished tied for sixth overall after shooting 74 (+2) on the final day by finishing the day with 12 straight pars. McRae earned All-WCC honors, while

  • Holm finished the event tied for 12th place at 226 (+10), while Grimberg tied for ninth overall. Grimberg entered the final round in 18th place but carded a final round score of par-72 (the second best round of the day) to move into the top-10.

  • SR Daniel Cone, who entered the day tied for 13th place, dropped to 23rd overall after a final round 81 (+9), while FR Mac McClung also shot 81 on the final day to bring him to 21st place overall.

  • The San Diego men finished in second place at the WCC Championships, coming short of the WCC title by just five strokes (892). JR Gunner Wiebe won medalist honors to become just the fourth Torero to take home the individual title after fiting a final round score of 72 to beat out Pepperdine's Carl Smith IV by two strokes.

  • The Toreros were selected to compete at the NCAA West Regional, where they finished third to earn a spot at the NCAA Golf Championships for the second consecutive year. The Toreros were unable to advance to match play after losing in a sudden death playoff to No. 2-ranked Stanford and ended the season with an impressive 8th place showing.

  • Wiebe and teammates SO Alex Ching and JR Scott Brace earned spots on the All-WCC team. Ching was also named to the Division I Ping All-America honorable mention team after tying for second at Nationals.

  • The San Francisco men landed in fourth place at the WCC Championships with a total team score of 898. The Dons were led by SO Ji Hwan Park, who finished third overall with a three-round score of 219.

  • Park garnered a spot on the All-WCC team for his performance, while SR Domingo Jojola earned Honorable Mention after tying for 12th overall (226) in the 40-man field.

  • The San Francisco women finished second at this year's conference tournament (938). Three Dons placed in the top-10 with JR Danielle Cvitanov, SR Christina Stockton, and FR Katrina Hegge taking fourth, sixth, and eighth, respectively. All three top finishers gained spots on the All-WCC team, and Natasha Podmore made the Honorable Mention list after tying for 11th overall.

  • The Dons ended their season at the NCAA West Regional, where they placed 21st in the 25-team field.

  • The Santa Clara men's golf team ended their season by placing third at the 2010 WCC Championships, tallying a total team score of 896. The Broncos were led by SO Cory Mehl, who finished in fifth place with a three-round score of 221.

  • Mehl landed a spot on the All-WCC team with teammate Scott Travers, who tied for sixth at the conference tournament and later was selected as the 2010 WCC Player of the Year. SR Jimmy Cacho garnered Honorable Mention after tying for ninth.

  • Like their male counterparts, the Santa Clara women's team also placed third at the WCC Championships. The team put together a total score of 972.

  • The Broncos were led by JR Miki Ueoka, who finished ninth with a three-round score of 241, earning her a spot on the All-WCC team with teammate SO Tamara Surtees, who landed in 10th. SR Jamie Nonaka tied for 14th, enough for Honorable Mention.
