West Coast Conference Rowing Teams Use Final Weeks to Prepare for WCC Championships

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- All seven West Coast Conference rowing squads have just a little over three weeks to prepare for the WCC Championships on Saturday, May 18th at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • The inaugural West Coast Conference Crew of the Month was awared to Loyola Marymount on April 16th. LMU's Varsity 8 crew began the month of March with a huge head-to-head victory over WCC preseason favorite Gonzaga on March 15 with the Lions earning a time of 7:21.84 to the Zags' 7:31.01. The win marked LMU's first over the Zags since the 2006 WCC Championship.

  • Creighton defeated Nebraska in a dual meet on April 20th at Carter Lake. The Jays took the top two positions in each of the three events---Varsity 8, Varsity 4A, and Varsity 4B. Creighton returns to action on Saturday, April 27th as the team travels to Tulsa, Okla. to face the Tulsa Hurricanes in the final regular season meet before the WCC Championships.

  • Gonzaga won all six races of the George Washington Invitational on April 13th. The sweep helped the Bulldogs claim second in the Howard W. Wilkins Bowl Point standings. The Zags will next participate in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships April 27-28 in Sacramento, Calif.

  • Saint Mary's took two of their three races against San Diego State at the Norcal/SoCal showdown. The first Varsity 8 boat got things started, edging the Aztecs with a time of 6:56.9, which was over three seconds faster than Saturday's time for the Gaels. San Diego State crossed in 7:08.1. The Gaels will also compete at the WIRA Championships on April 27-28 at Lake Natoma.

  • Portland won all three races to sweep a dual against the Seattle Redhawks on April 20th on the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The Pilots next return to the water when they head back to Seattle for the Windermere Cup on Saturday, May 4th.
